The resurgence of traditional craft…

I feel so fortunate to have found my passion in ceramics. My craft gives me such a strong sense of being grounded as well as being creatively stimulating. I know I’m not alone in this, as so many of us have turned to new hobbies since Covid 19 hit and left many people briefly with more time on their hands…

But its not just hobbyists who have been reconnecting with crafting. There seems to be have been a general shift towards the handmade over the last decade. A return to seeking out handcrafted products and artisanal small brands. And thank goodness as the UK is brimming with such talent and passion. Whenever I am selling at an event or trade show, I am always blown away by the sheer number of highly skilled and imaginative crafts folk out there, working so hard to breathe new life into their own particular niche tradition.

The resurgence of traditional crafts, including pottery, in the UK reflects a broader societal trend towards reconnecting with heritage, sustainability, and the handmade. In recent years, there has been a noticeable revival of interest in artisanal skills and craftsmanship, driven by various factors such as a desire for authenticity, the rise of the maker movement, and a growing appreciation for the value of handmade goods in a mass-produced world.

Pottery, in particular, has seen a resurgence as more people seek out unique, handcrafted items with character and individuality. There's a renewed interest in learning pottery techniques, both as a hobby and as a profession. This trend is evident in the increasing number of pottery classes, workshops, and studios across the UK, where keen enthusiasts can learn the art of throwing, glazing, and firing clay.

Moreover, social media platforms like Instagram ( for which I am forever grateful) have played a significant role in promoting traditional crafts, allowing makers like me to showcase their work to a global audience and connect with like-minded individuals.

Additionally, the emphasis on sustainability and environmental consciousness has also contributed to the resurgence of traditional crafts. Many people are turning away from mass-produced goods in favor of locally sourced, handmade products with a smaller ecological footprint. Pottery, with its emphasis on natural materials and traditional production methods, aligns well with these values.

I am so proud to be part of a movement that celebrates the beauty of handmade objects. I feel so privileged to know that my collections are in the homes of my loyal customers. Its such a gift to me and ones I am always truly grateful for.
